For travelers
The parts most people ask about before or right after they unlock a local.
What do I actually get when I unlock a local?
Their full list — every pick (restaurants, bars, cafés, beaches, coffee, day trips) with the personal note behind it, every event they're tracking that week, every avoid they'd warn a friend off, and any tips they've written (taxis, ATMs, altitude, that kind of thing). Plus a direct line to chat with them.
Before unlock you see two free picks, the guide's bio, a photo carousel, one review, and the counts of everything else — the paywall is on the details, not the existence.
How long does my unlock last?
45 days from the moment you unlock. Long enough for a trip plus a couple of return visits. When it lapses, the picks re-lock but your chat history stays visible.
You can extend for $8 anytime — adds another 30 days on top of whatever's left.
Can I get a refund?
Unlocks are digital goods — once you view a local's picks, notes, and tips, the purchase is delivered and non-refundable. We can't un-deliver content you've already seen.
The exceptions where we do refund: you were charged but the unlock never activated (a technical failure on our end — we detect these automatically), or you paid for a custom itinerary and the local never delivered it. Anything else is case-by-case at our discretion — no promises.
Chat availability isn't a refund trigger. A local being slow to reply, unavailable during your dates, or declining to help with something specific doesn't change the fact that their picks and tips were delivered.
What if my local doesn't reply?
Most locals reply within a day, some within a few hours. They have jobs too, so a longer wait during their busy stretches is normal. If you need something in-depth — a full day plan, tricky reservation navigation, group logistics — the custom itinerary feature is built for that and gets you a written-out answer for a set fee.
If a local has stopped replying to anyone for weeks, we'll notice through our own analytics and either nudge them or hide them from discovery. If you have a specific problem, email support@getlocalyzed.com.
Can I unlock more than one local in the same city?
Yes. Different locals have different tastes — some are food-first, some are nightlife, some know the day-trip cenotes cold. Layering two or three gives you a much richer picture. Every unlock is separate; discounts across multiple aren't a thing today.
Do you cover cities outside Tulum, Mexico City, and Seattle?
Those are the three launch cities in August 2026. More coming soon after. If you want a specific city, sign up on /join with the city name — we prioritize based on demand signals plus which locals apply.
Can I share my unlock with the people I'm traveling with?
Yes — every unlock has a share link that adds up to a small group to the same custom itinerary and gives them view access to the same picks. Open your custom itinerary on /me and hit Share.
What if my travel dates change?
Nothing about your unlock changes with your dates — you still have 45 days from purchase. If your trip slid past that window, extend for $8 and you're covered.
How does a custom itinerary work vs a regular unlock?
A regular unlock gives you the local's full standing list — their picks organized by category, ready to browse. A custom itinerary is a separate paid service where the local writes a day-by-day plan for your specific dates + travel style. Not every local offers them; you'll see the option on their profile if they do.
Itineraries are priced per-day. You request → the local accepts + writes → you review + pay on delivery.
The app opened in Chrome / Safari when I tapped a Localyzed link — is that normal?
Yes for now — the traveler side is a web app that runs great on mobile browsers. A native app is coming; until then, add the site to your home screen for a one-tap launch (Share → Add to Home Screen on iOS, three-dot menu → Add to Home Screen on Android).
Payments, cards, taxes
What forms of payment do you accept?
Any card Stripe accepts, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay through the Stripe checkout page. We never see or store your card number — Stripe handles it.
Do prices include tax?
Yes. If your local is based in Mexico, we collect and remit IVA on their behalf as merchant of record — you don't do anything extra at checkout. Prices shown are what you pay.
I paid but I don't have access — what happened?
Rare, but real. Most likely: our webhook briefly errored and your unlock is stuck in a pending state. Wait 60 seconds and refresh — if it hasn't cleared, email support@getlocalyzed.com with the email you paid with and we'll fix it same-day + refund if anything went wrong.
Why was I charged in USD when I'm in Mexico?
We price in USD platform-wide so guides in different countries all see the same numbers. Your card will show the converted amount at your bank's exchange rate. No hidden fees from us.
Is my card info secure?
Stripe processes every charge — we never see the card number and it never touches our servers. Stripe is PCI-DSS Level 1 (the highest tier) and every checkout page is on stripe.com's own domain during payment.
For local guides
Everything you'd want to know before applying or after getting invited.
How much do I make per unlock?
60% of every unlock that comes through Localyzed's own traffic (our marketing, city pages, homepage discovery). 80% of every unlock that comes through your own affiliate link — the short version is getlocalyzed.com/@yourhandle, which redirects to your profile with your ref code attached. Same math on custom itineraries (70% organic / 80% your link).
Those percentages are before payment processing (Stripe typically takes 3-5% of the transaction). Your final payout is the amount travelers pay minus Localyzed's cut, minus Stripe's processing, minus any refunds or taxes.
Set your unlock price yourself. We suggest starting at $25–$35; more once you have a few reviews.
When do I get paid?
Stripe pays out to your linked bank account on a rolling schedule (typically weekly in your country's default timing). You can see every payout in the Payouts tab of your admin dashboard.
Why isn't my Stripe Connect ready?
Stripe requires identity verification for anyone receiving payouts. If the onboarding page says 'Pending', it usually means Stripe needs one more piece of info — return to the onboarding flow to see what.
Guides can go live before Stripe is done; you just can't accept unlocks until it clears. We hide your unlock button on your public profile in the meantime.
What's the difference between a pick and an avoid?
Picks are places you'd send a friend to. Avoids are places you'd warn a friend off — 'don't waste an evening at X, go to Y instead.' The avoid list is public before unlock (unlike your picks) because they're the most differentiating thing a real local can offer.
2–5 honest avoids is where most great profiles land. Frame each one constructively: what to do instead.
Do I have to reply to every chat?
You're not on-call — the unlock covers your picks whether or not you chat. But guides who do reply build repeat travelers, better reviews, and organic word-of-mouth. A quick reply within a day is a good norm.
For anything that would take real work to answer well — a custom day-by-day, restaurant reservations at scale, group logistics — steer the traveler to your custom itinerary flow. It's a paid deliverable so your time is compensated instead of eaten by unpaid DMs.
If you do go silent for weeks we'll notice through analytics and either nudge you or hide your profile from discovery until you re-engage.
Can I edit picks after publishing?
Anytime. Every edit bumps the 'last updated' timestamp on your profile so travelers see you're active. Aim to refresh at least monthly — stale picks kill trust.
How many picks should I have?
Minimum to go live is 5 real picks. Great profiles have 20+ spread across food, drinks, nightlife, culture, outdoors, and coffee. The higher your pick count and the fresher your last-updated date, the higher you rank in city discovery.
Someone left a bad review — can I remove it?
You can't remove a review, but you can flag it if it's fake, off-topic, or violates our guidelines. Real feedback about your picks stays up — it's the point.
Every review has a 48-hour edit window after submission, then locks so both sides can trust it.
Do I owe taxes on what I earn?
Yes. We don't file taxes on your behalf; your Stripe payout dashboard shows every dollar you received. If you're US-based we may issue a 1099 at year-end depending on volume. Talk to a local tax professional if you're not sure what you owe.
Can I remove my profile?
Yes — 'Go dormant' in your admin settings hides you from discovery immediately, keeps your existing unlocks + chats accessible to travelers who already paid, and stops any new unlocks. Full account deletion is a separate flow (email support@getlocalyzed.com for now).
Account + privacy
How do I sign in?
Google, phone SMS, or email magic link. All three work interchangeably — sign in with whichever is convenient and we'll link accounts automatically as long as the email matches.
How do I change my email?
Email change is manual today — email support@getlocalyzed.com from the old address with the new one. Self-serve is on the roadmap.
How do I delete my account?
Self-serve deletion is coming to /me/settings — until then, email support@getlocalyzed.com with the address on your account. We honor deletion requests within 30 days per GDPR + Mexico's LGPD.
For legal + accounting reasons we keep transaction records (invoice, payout, refund) for 7 years even after account deletion. Nothing personally identifying stays attached — the row is anonymized.
How do I unsubscribe from emails?
Every email we send has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Chat notification emails have a separate opt-out inside the email so you don't accidentally opt out of your own conversations.
Where is my data stored?
US-based servers (Supabase + Vercel). If you're in a jurisdiction with residency rules we're happy to walk you through what's collected — email support@getlocalyzed.com.
Trust + safety
Are guides verified?
Every guide applies through /become-a-local and is manually reviewed before going live. We verify identity via Stripe Connect for payouts. We don't background-check — you're paying for their taste, not their character certificate.
What if a guide is inappropriate?
Email support@getlocalyzed.com with the guide's handle and what happened. We take it seriously. Repeat offenders are removed; egregious incidents get immediate suspension.
Can I block or report someone in chat?
Block/report is on the roadmap; until then email support@getlocalyzed.com and we'll handle it manually.
Something else?
Email support@getlocalyzed.com — a real person reads every message. We're small; you'll usually get a same-day reply.
Some things aren’t worth writing a full FAQ for. Email us and we’ll sort it.
